Runes
are a form of script used from the 1st century to the Middle
Ages by the people of Northern Europe. This website is about
runes, rune symbols, celtic runes, nordic runes, norse runes,
viking runes, stones, soldier and rune charms. With its roots
in Norse Mythology, the Runes are symbolic in nature, each Rune
having a spiritual significance. Like Chinese characters, they
also form words, which have actual meanings in the Germanic
language such as Fehu, which means “ cattle”. Runes
were also used in documents, songs, poems, magic and divination,
usually cut into jewelry and weapons for its protective powers.
The word “Rune” actually means secret, whisper and
mystery. Each Rune, apart from its literal meaning, has a story
attached to it which is related to Norse mythology.
In contemporary times, although Runes are popularly used for divination
purposes, it remains an exemplary achievement in written script,
providing a fascinating insight into the world of an ancient
people whose lives were uniquely ingrained in the harmony
of nature and spirituality.
“A twelfth (spell) I know:
when I see aloft upon a tree
A corpse swinging from a rope,
Then I cut and paint runes
So that the man walks
And speaks with me.”
The Havamal, stanza 157 |
